Why Buy A Baby Sling?

Unless you have fully known the unbelievable value of carrying your newborn “hands free,” you will never know what you are overlooking. From the beginning of time, mothers of newborn infants have been occupied with other day-to-day responsibilities that often demanded the use of their hands. Because a newborn human demands to have the need to be nurtured met in a very determined way at times, the new mother has few choices: let the infant cry it out until he or she either falls asleep or reached the realization that crying was not going to produce the desired nurturing, put off the work at hand in order to tend to the baby’s needs and wants until the baby was ready for a nap, or incorporate the physical contact into the work at hand.

Somewhere along the way, western civilization moved away from the use of baby slings, scarves, and carriers that functioned to keep the baby close to his or her mother’s body without paralysing the mother from being able to accomplish her many daily duties. As Luck Would Have It, with the advent of the internet, women have started opening their eyes to some of the incredible ideas that were lost with the introduction of pushchairs, bouncy seats, car seats, and bassinets.

You have many different types of front baby carriers to choose from including backpacks, front carriers and slings.. All will enable you to work hands free and nuture your baby while safely performing other jobs.

Baby front carriers, which are comprised of two shoulder harness straps that typically criss-cross the back and support a fabric seat that the baby is {slid|slipped} into with his or her feet dangling. In this type of carrier, the baby can face toward either the front or the back and is usually held very close to the adult’s chest.

Backpacks are usualy used for a slightly older baby that has good neck control and is sitting up reasonably well without support. Baby backpacks typically have a rugged aluminum or plastic frame. The advantage is that the heavier baby is more easily held with the stronger back muscles. The main disadvantage is that backpacks do not lend to the intimacy of face-to-face contact with the infant.

A baby scarf is a long fabric that is wrapped around the baby and the shoulders and back of the mother. The swathing effect keeps the baby close to the heat, sound, and touch of his or her parent. Once a baby begins to get a little older and more active, a scarf is more difficult to use as the baby often works them loose, rendering them less safe.

A baby sling is perhaps the most versatile of the options available for hands free carrying of a baby because of the ease in positioning the baby in accordance with his or her size, strength, development, and immediate needs. A baby can lie down in a cradled position, discreetly breastfeed (Yes. With practice, this too can take place HANDS FREE!), sit up either facing the adult, facing away from the adult, sitting on the hip of the adults, or even on the back. The disadvantage of the sling is that it will take patient practice to get comfortable with as your baby grows. Take the word of someone who knows, your persistance will pay off and you’ll be able to use your baby sling until he is four or five years old.

Don’t rush into a purchase. Take your time and discover for yourself which type of baby carrier suits you and your baby the best.

2.  Write A Halloween Story Together.  This is a great activity to make an annual family tradition.  The entire family gets to choose the characters, sometimes making inanimate objects like pumpkins and candy corn come alive. Once you create the characters, the setting and the story line, you’ll be surprised how much each family member wants to contribute to the story.

Save each year’s story in a scrapbook and read the stories from past seasons.  It’s a great memory maker.

3.  Watch Halloween Movies Together. Share an annual movie night together by renting “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” “Bednobs & Broomsticks,” “Monsters Inc.,” or “Nightmare Before Christmas.”  Make some popcorn with orange popcorn salt. Serve it with an orange drink. You could even put orange or black light bulbs in the lamps just for the special occasion.

4.  Go On A Nature Walk. Take a walk together through a hiking trail or park.  As you walk, collect leaves, rocks, pinecones and other bits of nature to bring home and display in a large glass bowl.  It makes a gorgeous and memorable centerpiece.

5.  Have A Monster Mash Dance Party. There are many Halloween-themed CDs available during this time of year.  Have an all-family Halloween Dance Party and dance to all the popular Halloween songs.  Your kids will watch you dance and think they have crazy parents, but maybe without admitting it, they’ll also have the time of their lives.

5.  Play “Clue”.  Since Halloween is all about mystery, playing the game of Clue will reinforce the season and provide a lot of family fun at the same time.

6.  Paint Pumpkins. Pumpkin Painting is the newest range in Halloween crafts.  Carving jack-o-lanterns is a Halloween tradition, but the process is messy, dangerous and the jack-o-lanterns only last a few days after Halloween night.  Painting Pumpkins is an activity everyone in the family can enjoy, even the littlest goblins.

By having each family member paint their own pumpkin, you will have a fun and memorable family of pumpkins to proudly display in your home or on your front porch.

Newborn Baby Care: Don’t Be Overwhelmed By Your Baby’s Crying

Newborn baby care is not as easy as is taking care of toddlers and infants older than six months and the reason why you may have trouble with providing proper newborn baby care is that the newborns are very delicate at such a young age and they are also not able to express their feelings other than by crying. Sometimes, experienced and inexperienced mothers who have difficulties in newborn baby care will descend into a condition known as post-natal depression which is not a good thing.

Be Informed

In case you are a mother that is suffering from post-natal depression you would do well to become better informed about how to handle your condition and by reading books on how to care for infants, you may even be able to overcome these difficulties without too much trouble. Also, being informed about newborn baby care will help you to handle different situations – even those that involve unusual behavior in your baby.

As a parent you will no doubt have heard many old wives’ takes regarding newborn baby care and a common piece of advice that you will get from older family members would be that you should not take your infant baby out of the home. However, modern thinking is very different as it has now been established that babies require getting their dose of sunshine in the mornings. It is only necessary that you ensure that the baby is dressed in comfortable clothes; cool in the summer; warm in the winter, and then there is no harm in taking them outdoors.

Another aspect to newborn baby care is noticing changes in the skin of babies who are just a few weeks old. This is a time when the skin may begin to turn flaky and though it may not be necessary for you to apply oils or lotions to treat the condition; you should gently sponge the skin while you are bathing your baby to remove the shedding skin.

It is also quite common for the newborn to develop rashes on the skin and the right newborn baby care for this condition is to treat the affected areas with ointments and creams – though nothing that is of too harsh a nature.

The arrival of a newborn baby boy always gives occasion for a lot of joy and though dressing the baby boy is not as much fun and a challenge as dressing newborn baby girls, as a parent, you can still derive a lot of pleasure from this aspect of raising a baby boy.

Another aspect to providing proper newborn baby care is deciding whether or not it is a good idea to carry your infant when he starts to cry. Though parents are generally averse to giving in to the crying of a newborn baby, at such a tender age, it often becomes impossible to not give in and take him or her up in your arms. Often, the reason why babies start crying has to do with their need to get something - such as needing to be fed or needing to drink milk. You can easily resolve this newborn baby care issue by comforting the baby with a small feed or even by breastfeeding the infant.

Baby Health Depends On Food And Environment

Baby health is dependent to a great extent on the health of the mother, especially during the time of her pregnancy.  The genes of both the parents have a large role to play in baby health.  Besides, the care taken of the baby, nursing the baby and all the precautions taken against major diseases contribute to it.

Care Before Birth

To ensure baby health the expectant mother must keep herself physically fit to have a normal and healthy baby.  Most women require special foods high in proteins after they become pregnant.  The nourishment should be good, and the mother should be relieved from work stress or any other kind of mental stress.  This can have an effect on baby health later.

Baby health care indicates providing the proper environment for the baby, where the environment should be clean, safe and cheerful.  Physical surroundings alone have little influence on the baby health and its development.  The people responsible for a baby’s care are the most important part of the baby’s environment.

Feeding procedures

A baby may be fed milk from the mother’s breast or baby milk mixture from a bottle.  It is always better to breast-feed the baby at least the first few months in the beginning, but sometimes it may not be possible and bottle feeding is the answer.  Baby health is largely dependent on the fact whether the baby has been breast-fed or not.  A natural immunity is built within the baby’s body if he is nursed by the mother, and makes him less prone to diseases and gives him a stronger constitution. Besides, the mother’s milk contains all the nourishment that most babies need, like the essential vitamins.

Vaccination

In most countries, babies are usually vaccinated against seven fatal diseases.  This has become a normal procedure for good baby health, and soon after birth the baby receives the vaccinations in stages from the family doctor or a pediatrician.   In any case regular visits to the doctor are important to check out whether the growth and the development of the baby are proceeding normally.  Any untoward signs showing deterioration in baby health can be treated immediately.

Physical and emotional deprivations are two environmental factors that have a severe effect on baby health and their growth and development.  Babies brought up in poor living conditions are likely to be smaller and more prone to illnesses and accidents.  Those who are not cuddled, held and loved become listless, lose their appetite, and in cases of extreme neglect, may not survive. Babies who are cared for lovingly, that is, in close and understanding contact with their parents, have the best chances of developing a normal, healthy personality.

Moving Abroad: How to Deal with the Kids

Moving overseas is a life changing step: even more so if you are taking your children. Here are some tips to consider before deciding to migrate with your family

Your Children’s Education.

Once a child is in high school the effect of moving overseas will have a drastic affect on their education: and American child who excels in Spanish won’t be happy to find that Spanish is not a common option in Australian high schools. Younger children will generally find a move less stressful – particularly if they have siblings that they get on well with.

Children’s Exposure to a New Culture and Language.

Moving to a non-English speaking country can be a great chance for children to become bilingual. Make sure you take advantage and don’t cocoon them in the English-speaking expat community.

Effect on Relatives Staying Behind.

Are your children close to relatives who are staying behind? Both sides may be upset – how are you going to deal with the conflict? Make sure you think through how to manage this so you don’t get involved in an unofficial “tug of love”!

Should Older Children Come Abroad.

These days children often stay at home into their 20’s. However if you are relocating then older children may have to become independent in a hurry. Alternatively children of high school age may want to board in order to finish their high school education in their home country.

Your Spouse May Not Have a Work Permit.

Depending of the conditions of your visa or right to work in a country your partner may not necessarily be legally able to work. Or they may be able to work but not have their qualification recognized or the language skills necessary. This can be either welcome or daunting depending on your family’s circumstances.
